Exercise: Where to Start

Visiting a gym can be intimidating enough without having to decide which exercise machine to use. You need to find what works for you and will give you the incentive to work out. There are many machines out there, so we will cover some here along with some tips and other information for those who are feeling overwhelmed by exercise machines.  In addition, if you are working out at home on your own equipment, it is very important to stay motivated; otherwise you may be tempted to ditch your workouts.  With these machines, there is no excuse not to work out. If the weather is miserable, you can work out indoors, whether at home or at the gym.

The Treadmill

This may not be the best choice for a beginner, as it requires a lot of balance. However, you can expect to burn the most calories on this machine, at the rate of 100 calories per mile. Weight could be an issue, putting stress on your joints. If the machine does not feel right to your knees or back, move to another unit.  Another benefit to using the treadmill is that you can exercise inside during the cold winter months, and for women, it can be safer than jogging at night.

The Elliptical Machine

This exercise machine can be a good alternative to the treadmill.  The calorie burn rate is high because you are using your muscles. This is a great workout for your heart because it is high-intensity and low-impact.

A Stationary Bicycle

A stationary bike gives the least amount of strain on your joints. There is a possibility for knee strain, however, if the bike is not properly adjusted to your body. You will have to work out much harder pedaling 4 miles just to burn 100 calories, so this may not be your first choice in exercise machines.  It is nice to be able to ride a bike no matter what the weather outside is doing.

A Rowing Machine

Rowing machines can offer much more of a cardiovascular workout. Pushing with your legs and pulling with your arms requires coordination. It also forces you to use your core stomach muscles to avoid back problems. Unfortunately, if you are overweight, this could cause back pain and be very uncomfortable.  The upside is that this machine burns many calories! So if you are fit enough, jump onto this exercise machine!
